Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA)
The DMA is a professional terminal degree emphasizing advanced performance, pedagogy, and scholarly engagement. Students are expected to complete an extensive recital schedule and program notes for each performance. Typical completion is 3–5 years. Ideal for performers, conductors, or those seeking high-level teaching positions.
Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation, official transcripts, SAT/ACT scores (or equivalent), and for international students, TOEFL or IELTS scores. A successful audition is required, either in-person or via video submission.

To complete the DMA, students must perform six recitals (two solo, two chamber, two concerto with orchestra) and prepare expanded program notes for each. No written thesis is required.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The PhD is a research-oriented degree designed for students focused on musicology, theory, or composition. Students will conduct original research culminating in a thesis, while also completing performance requirements. Completion typically takes 3–5 years. Ideal for careers in academia, research, or scholarly publication.
